What is the Flu Vaccination Service?

The Flu Vaccination Service is the provision of a flu vaccine, administered by a specially trained Pharmacist, to help prevent you catching flu.

Who is it for?

The Flu Vaccination Service is suitable for most adults. If you are interested in receiving the service, your Pharmacist will take you through a short series of questions to ensure that it is suitable before giving the vaccination.

Why should I have a flu vaccine?

Flu (or winter influenza) is an acute respiratory viral infection caused by an influenza virus. The virus can affect anyone in any age group. Influenza usually occurs in winter months, from October to April in the UK.

For the majority of people, flu is unpleasant but not life threatening. However, for some people, complications can result in more serious illness, such as bronchitis or pneumonia.

The influenza virus is highly contagious. It can be passed from person to person either through airborne transmission (for example when someone coughs or sneezes) or by touching someone or something, which is contaminated with the virus.

Signs and symptoms of flu include general aches and pains, shivering, cough, sneezing raised temperature and fatigue/weakness.

By receiving a flu vaccination you can:

Avoid the symptoms of flu
Stop yourself from passing flu on to other members of your household
Prevent any missed days from work due to the symptoms of flu
Lifelong immunity to the influenza virus is virtually impossible to achieve and therefore an annual vaccination is required to provide protection from the disease.
